Dell Color Laser Printer 3100cn

Mark: Average

I recently purchased the Dell 3100cn. CNet also gave it a good review. However, I would only give it a C+/B- rating with respect to its use with eCS. Here is a quick summary:

Positive

  • Easy setup
  • Above average color output
  • Linux and Mac drivers
  • Easily accessible PPD file
  • Front load manual paper feed
  • Standard 400 sheet automatic paper tray - not a skimpy 200 or 250 sheet tray

Negative

  • The printer will cancel print jobs created by applications that generate a RAW postscript format in the printer spool. These applications are Acrobat, Copy Shop, Lotus Organizer, Open Office, and PmFax.
  • The printer will "overload" and the outstanding print jobs will be discarded. This happens in both eCS and Win2000. This could be an available memory problem (64Mb).
  • Use of the manual feed requires pressing the Accept button on the front panel twice before the printer will feed the envelope, etc. and pressing the Cancel button afterwards to restore the automatic feed. This may be solvable by altering the settings for the manual feed.

  • My solution for the first problem requires: Configuring the printer to use the RAW postscript format. This places the printer in a Data Wait state. However, it disrupts the power saving feature.

"Priming" the printer by generating a print screen or print from another application such as MED, Mozilla, or Word Pro before using.

  • The second problem is resolved by pressing the Cancel button on the front panel to reset the printer.

I purchased the 3100cn because of the low usage costs and low cost for a duplex unit. I would have returned the unit except that law school finals precluded me from setting up and testing the unit before the expiration of Dell's 21 day return window.

I found the solution to my major problem with the Dell 3100cn. The windows PPD file needs to have the following lines added before running PIN.EXE:

*% === Job Control Language ==

*JCLBegin: "<1B>%-12345X@PJL JOB<0A>"

*JCLToPSInterpreter: "@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = Postscript <0A>"

*JCLEnd: "<1B>%-12345X@PJL EOJ <0A><1B>%-12345X"

These lines solve the problem with applications that generate RAW postscript output.

Also, I found that the standard 64Mb of memory is insufficient if High Quality is selected for the Print Mode and Photo is selected for the RGB Color Correction. The printer does support up to another 512Mb in memory. The 512Mb of memory should be more than sufficient to should solve this problem.

Based on my resolution of the problem with printing RAW postscript files, I would give this printer a B/B+ rating.
