ASUS Eee PC 901

Mark: Average

eComStation 2.0 RC5

Recently I bought an ASUS Eee PC 901 which has almost the same hardware as the MSI Wind netbook or the rebranded Medion Akoya. The main difference is the LAN chipset and it is equipped with a 4GB SSD and an second 8 GB SSD instead of the 80 GB HDD.

Following the path already gone by Robin and Sigurd I managed to get an 1,5 GB partition on the second drive by shrinking the NTFS partition to 4 GB leaving 4 GB for eCS and the ECS_CDRUN. Note that both partitions must be logical and not primary. If you do that Windows will make one partition visible and the others hidden. I also shrank the first SSD to enable the bootmanager.

I had no problems with USB. The only problem was that the ECS_CDRUN partition isn't found. I managed with Dfsee to have the partitions fixed for LVM and eventually give it a fixed driveletter. After that I had no problems with finishing the eCS installation. I started with default settings and only changed the display driver to panorama and made sure that the USBcdrom was enabled. The Realtek HDA audio chipset isn't recognized but I installed uniaudio nevertheless. Exchanging afterwards the uniaud32.sys using the HDA driver from Paul Smedley.

Concerning audio I had the same problem as Shai and Sigurd as that multimedia isn't installed if loaded from a FAT partition. I finally changed that to HPFS to install it afterwards.

WLAN is now working thanks to Shai. I tried the RT2860 driver from him as well as the supplied driver from the installed windows. Both have the same problem that only profiles are working. Scanning isn't possible.

So what is working.

  • ACPI with /SMP /APIC /CD is working well and I have now 2 processors and battery showing in the taskbar.
  • Widescreen is also working very well with the Intel widescreen activator from Robert Lalla.
  • USB is working fine.
  • There is a new BIOS firmware available and strongly advise to flash that.

The audio and wlan drivers are a bit buggy giving me hangs sometime. So I hope that will improve in the future.

So the only thing left is LAN. Genmac isn't supporting the Atheros AR8121/AR8113 chipset.

Test the program:

ACPI kernel - it is aimed to reduce power consumption, noise (results of experiments)
