ASUS M3A78-EM
Mark: Good I am using this motherboard with an AMD Phenom X3 (triple Core) processor.
The NIC (a Realtek RTL8168/8111 - 10EC:8168) is supported nicely by GENMAC 2.2.
The sound is an ALC888 (ATI 1002:4383, IXP SB600 High Definition Audio Controller), supported by UniAud. UniAud v1.1.4RC6 works, but I am using v 1.9.10, from Paul Smedley.
The initial install, by eCS 2.0 RC5, went well, but the sound would not work, until I re-initialized the audio system (using minstall), and installed UniAud 1.1.4RC6, then replaced that with UniAud 1.9.10. I have not, yet, discovered a mixer, to enable things like CD, line in, or optical output.
The on board video is an ATI Radeon HD 3200 GPU, that works nicely with SNAPSE 3.1.8, as supplied by eCS 2.0 RC5. The video memory is stolen from main memory, with 32 meg minimum, which works nicely with SNAP (it only uses 16 meg anyway).
There are two EHCI USB contollers, and 5 OHCI USB controllers, with 12 ports available. It also has an OHCI FireWire port. There are 5 internal SATA ports, and one external SATA port. One COM port, with a header on the MB, that requires a cable to get it to the back panel. One printer port, that also requires a cable to get it to the back panel.
ACPI support is okay, using the SMP kernel, but any attempt to enable SMP mode, results in a hard freeze, with the eCS logo on screen. SMP does work with the older OS2APIC.PSD, and basic power control works with the older APM.
Overall, this seems to be a good combination. Of course, you do need Windows, to be able to use ALL of the doodads that are included, but it works nicely with eCS.

I think the support for the AMD/ATI chipset, is far better than the
support for AMD/NFORCE is. I got an Asus M3A78-EM motherboard (ATI
chipset), with an AMD triple core Phenom processor. ECS 2.0 RC6a (and
RC2, updated to ACPI 3.14) works pretty good with:
/SMP /PIC
It hangs at the boot logo, if I try:
/SMP /APIC
with, or without, any of the other switches. | Doug Bissett 2009-02-19 06:18:21 | Update:
ACPI does work well, with /SMP /PIC
Trying to use /SM /APIC sesults in a hard hang, apparently, when it attempts to load USBOHCI.SYS. It was suggested to try:
/SMP /APIC and /!NOD
That actually got a little further, but hangs on SDDHELP<whatever>.
I am awaiting further developments, but for now, I am happy... | Doug Bissett 2009-06-09 19:56:10 | I have got another one of these, with an AMD Quad core processor. It works about the same as with the triple core processor. I also find, that it works better with the older OS2APIC.PSD, than it does with ACPI.PSD. The difference is that the system hangs, for no apparent reason, after about 4 to 6 hours, when using ACPI.PSD, and runs for 4 to 6 DAYS with OS2APIC.PSD, without any problems, then it starts doing odd things, but doesn't hang. I see this same result on both systems. | Doug Bissett 2009-07-02 20:23:41 | Another update: ACPI 3.16 (pre), seems to have fixed a hang, that was happening after about 4 hours. It now runs about the same (5 to 7 days), before having problems, whether I use ACPI, or the older OS2APIC. Overall, I am pleased with this system, and my brother is too (he now has the triple core). | robert francoeur 2009-07-10 21:40:01 | to enable de spdif port for optical link
i place in config
run c:\mmos2\unimix.exe -id:29 -cnt0
-val1
by defauft the id:29 is 0
i have the sound on analog port and the spdif
i use UniAud 1.9.11
| Doug Bissett 2012-02-06 23:13:35 | Another update:
I have now updated to ACPI 3.19.15. WOW!
The power manager stuff is working.
Reactor temperature widget is working, but it needs to be set to the Asus P5B setting in the widget properties.
There is no need for any parameters on the PSD=ACPI.PSD line in CONFIG.SYS. APIC now works.

The ACPI 3.21.03 update makes this thing work really well. I am using SNAP 3.18 for video so that Doodle's Screen Saver can turn the screen off. I also updated to a new wide screen (LG E2442 TC). The Wide screen enabler works well.
One bad thing is that the onboard NIC crapped out. I installed a PCI card that has a Realtek 8169 on it. That also works well with the newest Multimac driver. |
