ASUS M4A87TD EVO

Mark: Good

I used an AMD Phenom II X4 3.4Ghz processor. The system has a Kingston 64G Sata SSD boot drive and a seagate Sata 2T hard drive, 4 G of dual channel DDR3 ram and a Powercolor HD4850 PCIex16 video card. As well as onboard sound and gigabit ethernet.

1st I disabled USB 3.0 support in the Bios. I installed with eCS 2.0 Gold and selected Snap as the video driver and the enhanced serial support. I let it select the Genmac driver for the gigabit ethernet and force selected UniAud for sound.

Once install completed I went into Adapters and Protocols and changed the nic from genmac to the RLT 8168 driver found in "rtgnd13.zip" on Hobbes. I downloaded the latest UniAud package (UniAud195-211.zip) from Netlabs and placed the *32.sys and *16.sys into \mmos2.

Now I have a working system with audio front and back and gigabit lan connection.

I spent 2 days trying to get acpi.psd to work with this motherboard but system refuses to boot with any form of PSD=ACPI.PSD in config.sys, without switches or with any combination. However, since I had the older OS2APIC.PSD found in the "ps_c005.zip" at eComStation, downloads, I gave it a try.

Now my sytem is booting to Desktop and reporting 4 cores. The stability of the system seems fine so far.

Lastly, there is no APM support because ACPI.PSD will not load. I have not tried the older "apm.sys" and "vapm.sys" as this system is going to be on 24/7/365 on a very large UPS.

One other note, when I go into "Screen", I can select my monitor and change the video resolution but the refresh rate is greyed out and not selectable. This does not seem to affect the monitor, it does not complain about unsupported resolutions and the picture is clear and does not flicker.

I would have given this motherboard combo a "very good" rating, but for the ACPI.PSD not being able to load.

I am a happy eCS 2.0 camper.

After further testing, I have determined that the system will not boot with acpi.psd in smp mode because of the Uniaud driver. Remming out the *32.sys and *16.sys statements allows the system to boot with /SMP /CD /R. Power off works and it detects 4 cores but is very slow on initializing the usb ports. ( I tried Lars Erdmans usb OHCI and EHCI drivers up to version 3, but, I think they were the cause of trashing the MBR on my 2T disk drive. When using his ohci drivers my system would just quit working, like a short, when ever I plugged any usb device into the left port on the front of my case. I had to turn off my power supply and then back on to get the computer to boot again, and then the MBR on the 2T drive was corrupted and LVM could only see the 2 500G partitions and not the 1T of free space left on the drive. The system would not boot with any of his EHCI drivers)

It takes about 30 sec. to boot to a working Desktop without the acpi.psd statement and about 150 sec. with the /SMP switch.

If the next Uniaud driver works with the acpi.psd this motherboard can be upgraded to a Very Good mark.
