ASUS M5A88-V EVO

Mark: Average

This board has the same chipset as the MM488TD-V EVO/USB3 I reviewed previously but has Socket AM3+ rather than the other board's Socket AM3 (no +). This new board can accommodate the FX-series processors, but the reviews on NewEgg.com suggested that these new CPUs are not all they are cracked up to be, so I stuck with a 965 Black Edition. I installed 4GB of RAM.

From my experience with the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3, I was sure that trying to install from the existing IDE optical drive would not work (these boards have a combination IDE/Firewire chip by VIA), so I got an SATA drive. I did initially leave the original IDE optical drive connected, but eCS did not detect it.

  • The onboard video (the same as on the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3) did not work with SNAP, but worked with Panorama VESA, but using the digital output I could not get an image that filled the screen of my Samsung wide-screen monitor: it filled the screen if I used the VGA output, but everything seemed slow compared to the video performance with SNAP and an ATI X1050 (X550 chip) on the previous motherboard. So I ended up disabling the onboard video and installing that ATI card, which SNAP uses at 1920x1080 quite happily.
  • Although I see that I had reported that the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3's onboard networking worked with the Realtek driver included with eCS 2.0, this board's ostensibly identical networking (Realtek RTL8111E) was a problem. The installer recognized it and installed the R8110 driver, which appeared to be working properly at boot time, yet the networking was totally unusable. I have read that this chip can be flaky on other operating systems too, so I disabled the onboard chip and installed the RTL8169 card I had used previously; this works fine with the same R8110 driver.
  • I found no parameters that worked with the version of ACPI that came with eCS 2.1, but the old OS2APIC.PSD driver worked fine and enabled all 4 cores. The latest ACPI (3.20.01) works with the /VW parameter but results in a very long boot time: 2 min 15 sec between displaying the EVFS banner and drawing the desktop. ACPI 3.19.15 was not much quicker, so I have reverted to OS2APIC.PSD. (The new ACPI worked with the /PIC parameter, but my SCSI devices -- LSILogic adapter -- were not recognized -- same problem as with earlier versions of ACPI.)
  • I changed the BIOS setting for the SATA drives to AHCI, and it appeared to work with the OS2AHCI.ADD driver, but I left it running overnight and found that it had trapped (Trap000d) in OS2AHCI, so I have reverted to IDE mode.

The PCI sniffer finds no errors in the IRQ routing table -- the first time I have seen this in many years.
