ASUS Z87-K

Mark: Average

(This report is prepared by ecomstation.ru scout), source of information: jjw

Here is some followup on the operation of the system on the ASUS Z87-K mother board after several days of tinkering:

  • Graphics: Integrated graphics works with Panorama. VDMs only work correctly in full screen sessions. Once started in full screen, a text mode program running in a VDM works correctly but is painfully slow.
  • Audio: So far I have been unable to get the onboard Realtek ALC887 HD audio to work. The SBLive produces only static using Sander's driver. It works fine with the latest UNIAUD.
  • Network: The driver for the onboard Realtek 8111GR does not load. Others have reported this on the news groups. The 3COM card works fine using Genmac W10B7X9200.
  • USB: Works better than on the A8N5X.
  • Printing: The Z87-K has no parallel port. To get around this, I purchased a USB to Parallel Printer Cable adapter for $13. When I plugged it in, a USB port was automatically created. The only configuration changes required were to change the port for the HP2100PC and HP2100PS printer objects from LPT1 to USB and to create a connection to the HP2100PC as LPT1.
  • SMP: SMP works. Booting takes noticeably longer (about 20-30 seconds). Hyper threading works. With the multi threaded applications I have available for testing, performance is slightly better with hyper threading disabled.
  • CD/DVD burner: LG GH24NS90 24X SATA Internal DVD Writer Burner - this unit was purchased in August, 2012 to replace the previous IDE burner which had become unreliable. It worked fine in the old system.

Reading and writing DVDs and data CDs work correctly.

    Issues:

    • Upon inserting a disk it takes between 35 and 60 seconds for the unit to become ready. It used to take 15 to 30 seconds which was already annoyingly long.
    • Playing and burning audio do not work. RSJ copy wizard reports unsupported function, e.g., Audio Read. As far as I can see the only differences are: 1. On the A8N5X motherboard, the drive was connected to an IDE connector using a bidirectional IDE to SATA converter; on the Z87-K the drive is directly connected to an on board SATA connector. 2. On the A8N5X the driver was DANIS506.ADD; on the Z87-K the driver is OS2AHCI.ADD.

How to prepare USB flash disks (USB harddisks and other USBMSD devices) so eComStation can access it?
