NetRexx is now open source

2011-06-30 01:41:00 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

NetRexx, a variant of the Rexx script language, developed by IBM, has been made open source software under the aegis of the Rexx Language Association (RexxLA). The first indication that the language was to be made open source came in February, but now the process has been completed.

NetRexx adds some object-oriented techniques to the Rexx language. It is compiled as Java byte code and then runs on practically any JVM, even on Google Android's Dalvik VM. NetRexx was developed in the mid-1990s; Rexx itself was created at the end of the 1970s and became popular at the beginning of the 1980s on OS/2 and Amiga in particular.

RexxLA says the language is to be published under the ICU licence, a variant based on the MIT license. Rene Vincent Jansen, president of the Rexx Language Association, hopes that new perspectives will open up for NetRexx as it becomes a much more widely used language under an open source licence (IBM speaks of an "effective alternative to the Java language" in its documentation).

Offering for developers: develop small cheap shareware apps

2011-05-01 03:05:54 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

The development of full-featured applications requires many efforts. That's why major part of eComStation shareware applications are very expensive (25 - 50 $).

Do the users need large graphics editors like Photoshop? Major part of users need simple editor for 5$ (or something like this).

Are you interested to develop small shareware applications? Let's discuss this topic in the forums on eComStation / OS/2 web-sites.

  • How to distribute cheap apps? eCo Market is ready to distribute such products.
  • How to accept payments from users? via Gift Cards
  • How to make payments to the developers? connect the developers to Mensys / BMT Micro

GL/2 needs some help

2010-12-17 13:22:41 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [[os2ddprog], Dee Sharpe]

I'm Dee Sharpe. Many of you have heard me digging around for OS/2 systemic info in the past, in an effort to create a gameplan for rewritting it. I've kicked off part of that initiative by starting the GL/2 project. The goal of this project is to great an OpenGL DDK for OS/2 & eCS that allows for hardware acceleration. Currently, I'm stuck on a few points of the PM & GPI APIs & I need a little help. These are the main things that I'm having problems with:

  • ---pglWaitPM() currently has no way to check to make sure that the presentation manager is finished drawing to the viewing area of the window before it returns.
  • ---pglUseFont() still doesn't have a solution for putting the font on a bitmap.
  • ---pglUsePMBitmapFont() was depreciated by IBM, so my implementation is well within reason by just returning FALSE. However, I'd like to go ahead & implement it properly for indirect contexts anyway.

Any help that you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated!
