  • ..

Are you going upgrade to new version of eCS?

2012-11-17 03:18:46 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

If you are going replace old eCS with new one then share your experience with other users:

  • which directories may contains apps? c:\programs, c:\tools, c:\util
  • (for developers) What cfg files of your application are important for migration? (should be copied to new system)
  • What system settings to save? (local network params, ..)
  • What settings of User Interface to save?

Suggestion for developers:

Create script migrate.cmd in the directory of your application, parameter: target_dir - target directory to save user data and cfg

Example: e:\migrate-20120725\688 - we are collecting all data to migrate-20120725, to the sub-directory N 688 (ID of your application)

Create cfg\ for settings, userdata\ for user data.

The user installs new system, extracts the contents of e:\migrate, All applications during installation can check if this directory exists and contains user data and settings.

How do you distinguish version of OS/2 / eComStation

2012-09-29 23:57:17 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

It's interesting that many Thinkpad users know all features of this laptops (to learn this you should spend 3 monthes of everyday studies). They know the differencies, features and prices. Year of manufacturing and internal layout.

Can eComStation users distinguish different versions of OS/2, eComStation? How to distinguish one version from other quickly? What are the key differencies?

The cost of eComStation computers don't change

  • Laptops with eComStation
  • Barebones with eCS
  • Servers (not available; let's release if the developers offer how to equip)

(RUS) The cost of Windows computers is growing in Russia:

ACPI 3.20.03 + kernel patch

2012-06-28 17:14:44 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS]

New version 3.20.03 of the ACPI software package is released.

This version has the following changes:

  • Updated to ACPICA version 20120518.
  • Some changes to the Power Manager
  • Implemented idle time HLT

A description of the ACPI software package is available at: http://svn.netlabs.org/acpi

You can download this new release from your Software Subscription Services at the Mensys website. Log in to Mensys with your Mensys login id and click the Downloads link. Click the "Software Subscription Services for eComStation" Download link and the ACPI drivers should be listed.

You can report problems at: http://svn.netlabs.org/acpi

Roderick Klein reminds:

Anyway in 486 or possibly even the 386 computer the HLT instruction was introduced. This is a kind of quick on off switches that makes the CPU idle. It reduces energy consumption and also the heat developement! Especialy in laptops this is important. Your hard ware lasts longer and your battery life increases! Orginaly the _W4 kernel (which does not support multiple CPU's) had support for CPU HLT instruction.

The SMP kernel we now use today in eCS (also on machines with a single core system) does not have HLT support build in. People tried in various ways to implement this. Andy Willes tried a patch but from what I read that did not work in all cases. Implementing such a patch is also no easy. It now seems David come up with a such method.

As every CPU (amd and Intel) support his HLT instruction it should make people there computers a lot cooler and reduce the electricityt bill :-)
